Annual Meetings

Many individuals in the region have expressed their opinions on what would be the most desirable format for the Southern Mensurationists' Meetings.  Most of them wanted to make the meetings a regular annual event.  Some  wanted conference participants to vote on whether meetings should be held at all, and if so, when and where they should take place.  In addition, some wanted to publish proceedings from the meetings, and others just wanted informal get-togethers.  Finally, some preferred meetings "by invitation only", and others wanted them to be open for all.

It is quite evident that there is a demand in the region for more than one type of activity among forest biometricians and mensurationists. Meetings "by invitations only" can still be held by the original organization.  At the same time, there seems to be a demand for an open format mensurationists' meeting that functions on a regular basis.  If there are enough individuals that want to attend a meeting or present papers, or do both, then clearly the meetings should take place.  If no one registers, the meeting should not take place.

Accordingly, to build the momentum for the new Southern Mensurationists' organization, my colleagues and I scheduled meetings the Southern Mensurationists' annual meetings in  the years 1999 and 2000 for approximately the same time each year and (to minimize the organizational burden and to reduce any uncertainties about these meetings) at the same place.  We encourage everyone interested in the organization of these meetings to come forward and offer to take partial or complete charge of any of the subsequent meeting's organizational aspects.  By default the Southern Mensurationists' Meetings each year will be at the Holiday Inn Beach Resort on Jekyll Island, Georgia, around the week of Thanksgiving, and there will be voluntary publication in proceedings available.
